CoachThem x Game Transfer Blueprint: Bridging the Gap Between Practice and Game Performance

Every coach has felt it.

Your team looks sharp in practice - clean touches, smooth skating patterns, drills run at full pace - and then the puck drops on game night and many of those same skills disappear under pressure. Breakouts break down. Offensive zone entries slow to a crawl. Puck support fades. Players who look confident in practice struggle to make plays at game speed.

This gap between practice execution and game transfer is one of the biggest challenges in youth hockey development today. And it’s not because players aren’t trying. It’s because most practices and drills aren’t intentionally designed to replicate the demands, chaos, and reads required in real games.

That’s exactly why CoachThem and the Game Transfer Blueprint have joined forces - to help coaches build practices that actually show up when it matters and improve actual skill application in hockey games.

Why Players Struggle With Game Transfer

For years, hockey practices have relied heavily on isolated skill drills: tight turns around cones, passing patterns, flow drills that look good but miss the essential teaching moments players need to thrive in games.

The problem? Players rarely perform these skills in isolation during competition.

In games, every skill is connected to:

  • Pressure
  • Opponents
  • Situational reads
  • Teammate support
  • Space and timing

A player may have a great crossover in a drill, but that doesn’t mean they can use it to create separation off the rush. They may pass accurately stationary, but struggle to hit a teammate while scanning, moving, and evading pressure.

True development comes from building practices and drills that force players to think, problem-solve, and apply their hockey skills dynamically.

That is the foundation of the Game Transfer Blueprint.

The Four Layers of True Game Transfer

When coaches design practices that move athletes through these four layers, skill doesn’t just look good during drills - it becomes functional and reliable in games.

A Sample Progression: Turning a Simple 2v1 Drill Into Game Transfer

Here’s an example of how a common drill evolves using the four-layer model:

F1/F2 Entry Principles, 2 progressions (Layer 1, Layer 2)

Layer 1: Skill Execution

Two forwards work on timing a give-and-go entry with no defender.

Focus: passing touch, angle of entry, mid-lane drive.

Layer 2: Skill Under Pressure

Add a passive defender who applies predictable pressure.

Focus: Attackers now scanning early, recognizing body/stick position, using deception.

F1/F2 Entry Principles, (Layer 3) Reads

Layer 3: Skill with Reads

The defender now chooses one of two pressures - squeezing, forcing wide or patient inside the dots.

Focus: attackers now make reads on the fly.

F1/F2 2v1 Entry Principles (Layer 4) Game Application

Layer 4: Game Application

An overspeed entries 2 vs 1 where forwards attack defenders from both sides of the neutral-zone.

Focus: game pace, spacing, puck support, reads, execution under fatigue.

With CoachThem, this full progression can be diagrammed, saved, and shared in one session - giving coaches a ready-to-run package for their next practice.

Why This Approach Works at Every Level

Whether you’re working with beginners or advanced athletes, the principles of game transfer remain the same:

  • Skills must connect to decisions.
  • Decisions must connect to situations.
  • Situations must replicate the game.

When coaches shift their practice structure with purpose, players don’t just get better - they become confident, adaptable problem-solvers who can impact games consistently.

The Game Transfer Blueprint provides ready-made practice plans, concept breakdowns, and detailed whiteboard videos showing exactly how to teach each habit. CoachThem provides the platform to organize, modify, and share these plans efficiently.

The result is a coaching workflow that is fast, modern, and game-driven.

Game Transfer Blueprint:

Game transfer doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when practice design matches the realities of the sport and challenges players to think, read, and execute under pressure.

With MK Hockey’s Game Transfer Blueprint coaches and associations now have direct access to:
