It's that time again - you know it - Tryouts! So, you know how it goes, you have to assemble a practice that concentrates on certain skills. You can't have all the best goal-scorers or playmakers or defensive players or offensive players... you get the idea. You work with what you've got and you make it work.
Personally, I don't always choose to the best player on the ice. I prefer to look for the player with the most potential, someone who has drive and that sense of presence on the ice. What follows next is how to create that perfect plan that puts your player, the one who has the potential and the focus, the eye of the tiger, so-to-speak, in a situation where he stands out from the rest. The first question you have to ask yourself is what position are spots open? Here are some suggestions:
For goalies, do some drills that have passing that make them move from side to side. Give them a good warm-up to make sure you see them at their best. A defenseman should be put in a lot of 1 on 1, and 2 on 1 drills, to see how he handles these situations. Lastly, forwards. A forward should be put in an offensive situation but adding backchecking to the mix. Forwards should work just as hard backchecking.
