Developing strong hockey skills requires dedication, practice, and effective training drills. Coach Dan Fontas, a highly experienced and accomplished hockey coach, has devised a set of drills focusing on some key aspects of the game. With CoachThem, the ability to drill draw allows players to visualize and implement these drills easily. With a diverse coaching background, including Head Coach for Acton-Boxborough High School in Massachusetts, the Head Coach and General Manager for the New England Stars Junior Team, and currently holding the position of Assistant Coach at Cushing Academy while also serving as the General Manager of The Hockey Association, located in Hudson, NH, Fontas brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his training methods. Let’s take a peek at three of his recommended drills and their benefits for players.
This drill combines small area battles, puck protection, and competition; all essential elements in hockey. Players are divided into two teams, X and O, and start inside a designated circle. The objective is to protect the puck and engage in keep-away within the circle. When the whistle blows, players must leave the puck and race towards the red line for a one-on-one scoring opportunity. Simultaneously, another 1v1 battle begins. This drill improves players' puck control skills, enhances their ability to compete in tight spaces, and develops their offensive and defensive instincts.
Designed to sharpen angling, stick positioning, and one-on-one skills, this drill helps players excel in offensive and defensive situations. Player X skates with the puck until reaching the top of the circle and passes it to a stationary player O positioned at the far blue line. Player O initiates an attack but is not allowed to cut to the middle until entering the offensive zone. Player X must use strategic angling and stick positioning to prevent an offensive rush. This drill improves players' ability to control their opponents' movement, effectively use angles, and make sound defensive decisions.
In this drill, players work on breakouts, puck protection, and teamwork. The coach dumps the puck into the corner, creating a scenario where three X players break out against two O players. Bumpers are strategically placed to confine the players within a designated area, simulating a tight situation. The objective is to outnumber the forecheckers and gain control of the puck. Both defensemen actively engage in the corners while providing support, and a third player joins the play to ensure a smooth breakout. This drill fosters competition, emphasizes the importance of puck possession, and enhances players' ability to execute effective breakouts under pressure.
Coach Fontas's hockey skills drills are carefully crafted to develop crucial skills required for success. Whether it's enhancing puck control, improving defensive techniques, or fostering effective teamwork, these drills offer valuable opportunities for players to grow and excel in the game. By incorporating these drills into their training routine, players can elevate their skills, build confidence, and ultimately make a significant impact on the ice. Coach Fontas's extensive experience and dedication to player development shine through these drills, making them a valuable addition to any hockey training program!
