The final buzzer- whether it signifies a season’s ultimate success in winning the League Championship or disappointing early exit from the playoffs, it always represents something bigger… the start of the “off-season”.
The months that are spent away from weekly practices, games and tournaments are absolutely needed for players to rest the injuries that they’ve accumulated (and likely ignored) throughout the year, recharge their physical and mental energy systems and ultimately, train their strengths and improve their weaknesses.
Every player will go through their own unique steps to get them ready for the upcoming season and as coaches, we hold the responsibility to support the player’s recovery and provide structure for growth throughout the break and into the new year.
This poses the question- is there really such a thing as an “off-season” and if not, what is our role as coaches during the months away from competition?
The term “Off-Season” suggests a complete break from the sport after the last game has been played… and while a short vacation is undoubtedly needed for both players and coaches, it should not be long before things are kicked back into gear. Whether you are looking to develop your own skill as a coach, or that of your players, making efficient use of the offseason is VITAL for improvement and ensuring that you’ll hit the ground running come the new year.
With our team’s knowledge and experience at every level of sports, we’ve laid out our Top Suggestions on how you can improve as a coach and support your team through a successful “off-season”:
Tips for a Successful “Off-Season”
Player training can be as extensive as a set strength and conditioning program or as simple as the encouragement to play other sports. Off-season training should focus on developing skills that will translate to your sport while having some fun in the process.
As a coach, take advantage of the time away from practices and games and work away at a season plan. While leaving room for change, having a structure of drills and plans goes a long way in being prepared for the season.
Expand your knowledge by watching professional games, training videos and learning from the leaders in sport. Be a student of the game- there is always room to improve.
You don’t have to be the President of your association to have an influence on the initiatives that are implemented. Be a part of the development discussion and have a positive impact on the organization’s future.
Coach training doesn’t have to be sport specific. Apart from your certification, you can learn more about leadership, conflict management, and even effective speaking tactics to improve how you coach.
Getting closer to the season’s start, it’s always beneficial to get your players signed up for a training camp. Whether it’s led by you and your staff or outsourced to a training centre, ensure your players are conditioned for your sport before you jump into team practices.
Team getaways, problem-solving events or even a party can be ways to develop team’s chemistry, grow a bond and create excitement for the upcoming season.
Network with other coaches in your organization- get to know their “secret” tips and tricks, share some drills and learn from those around you!
The “off-season” may be time away from gruelling practices and fiercely competitive games, but it’s also a prime opportunity for your players to develop their skill and for you to grow as a coach.
