It’s been twenty-one years since the late Ron Mason brought this to my attention: the world of sports brings together people from different backgrounds, each with unique experiences. Along the way, you learn a little from everyone you meet.
Sports are so much more than scoring a goal or winning the game.
When Michigan State University was recruiting me, Ron Mason, the legendary head coach, shared something that has stuck with me ever since. During a visit to my house, he said, “Mike, you have to have balance in your life.” He held up both hands and formed a triangle with his fingers. “The sides represent social life, school, and hockey. You have to keep each side equal in length. If you pay too much attention to hockey, your social life and schooling will suffer. Too much of one thing is too much.”
Balance in everything we do is crucial. Thank you, Ron Mason.

That five-minute conversation has stayed with me for over two decades. Sometimes, all it takes is a brief moment to gain clarity on what’s truly important in life. It can even shift the way we approach our habits, priorities, and mindset.
