As hockey associations gear up for a new season, it’s crucial to effectively assess and address skill development needs of players at different age levels. We had a conversation with Mike Bonelli, who’s worked alongside some of the best hockey support groups (the NHL, USA Hockey, USA Floorball, etc.,), and have summarized the key components to maximizing athletic development both physically and mentally. What came out of the conversation is quite interesting; Bonelli outlines strategies that prioritize individual player development while considering team dynamics and goals. Worth the read!
Before the season begins, establishing a foundation through assessments and player evaluations is essential. By understanding each player’s current skill level, associations can tailor training programs to meet their specific needs. This approach allows for reflection on individual performance and advancement, facilitating targeted player development across age groups.

Clear and consistent communication is key to a successful season by sharing news, schedules, and lesson plans with players and parents through CoachThem. Keeping everyone informed and involved reduces misunderstandings and uncertainty, fostering a positive team environment and enhancing player engagement.
To streamline administrative tasks and maximize efficiency, utilize the talents of parents within the association. Form an off-ice admin squad; delegating roles such as schedule confirmation, scorekeeping, tournament coordination, equipment management, and social media management. By leveraging the support of parents, coaches can focus on the team and player development.
Advancements in technology, like our evolving platform, and data analysis, provide valuable insights to enhance player performance, training methodologies, and game strategies. CoachThem offers features and tools that allow associations to develop practice plans tailored to specific team needs. Coaches can access a wealth of resources, including archived drills and strategies, to keep training sessions fresh, modern, and dynamic.
To promote long-term athlete development, hockey associations should offer a holistic approach that extends beyond on-ice training. Encourage off-ice training, mental well-being, and education as integral components of players’ athletic journeys. Incorporate programs such as mental fitness training, dynamic stretching, nutrition, hydration, and breathing exercises, to reinforce these concepts and enhance overall player development.
As hockey associations prepare for the upcoming season, it’s crucial to prioritize player development while considering the needs of the team as a whole. Effective communication, streamlined administrative processes, leveraging technology, and embracing holistic athlete development, are key factors in achieving success. By implementing these strategies, hockey associations can create an environment that fosters individual growth, maximizes organizational efficiency, and sets the stage for a remarkable season ahead!
