Drill 1: Cyclone

Tags: 1 vs 0, Give & Go, Shooting, Warmup

• X1 starts with puck, passes across ice to X3.
• X1 skates along blue line, X3 passes back when X1 gets half way across ice.
• X1 makes touch pass up ice and skates along far blue line and receives a stretch pass from their starting line X2.
• Repeat on opposite side.

 

Drill 2: Build Up Game

Tags: 2 vs 2, Games, Small Areas, OMHA

• Drill begins from a 2v2 cross ice format with the coach spotting a puck in the zone.
• Each team can activate additional players by passing twice to the first person in their team's line.
• Once the player in line has received two passes, they then activate into the play and the next player in line gets ready as a possible outlet.
• There are no limits to the number of players a team can build up to during their shift.

 

Drill 3: Air Force 2 vs 2

Tags: 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, Minnesota Hockey

• Split one zone down the middle with cones. On one half, set up two nets. On the other side, split it into half again using cones.
• Start the drill with Coach 1 dumping a puck into each zone on that side of the ice. Both F1's race to the far puck and engage in 1 vs 1 keep away. Both F2's race to the puck in the closest zone and play 1 v 1 keep away.
• After 15 seconds, whistle blows. Coach 2 dumps a puck in the zone with two nets. Forward F1 & Forward F2 engage in a 2 vs 2 against Forward F1 & Forward F2 in that zone. At the same time, Coach 1 starts F3s and F4s in the next round of 1 vs 1s.

 

Drill 4: McDavid Escapes

Tags: Individual Skill, Puck Protection, The Coaches Site

• The drill starts with X1 standing facing the boards and receiving a spotted puck from X2.
• X2 follows their pass and provides token pressure towards X1.
• X1 must use shoulder checks to read the pressure and then use an evasive move to spin away from their opponent.
• X1 then attacks the net and uses another evasive move around X3 who acts as a defender, also providing token pressure.

 

Drill 5: Either Side Defend

Tags: 1 vs 1, Angling

• Xs and Os line up on the boards in the neutral zone. Coach shoots a puck just inside the zone of either blue line.
• The players whose side the puck is shot to will be on offense and the other will be on defense.
• The defensive player must take a route to the puck carrier that will angle them to the boards.
• Use your stick to shut the door and not allow the player to cut to the middle.
