However, what is the role of "THE COACH?"
Sports coaches assist athletes in developing their full potential. They are responsible for training athletes in a sport by analysing their performance, developing the athletes' relevant skills, and providing motivation. However, you are also responsible for providing guidance for the athlete in life and his or her sport.
The roles of the coach are many and varied, from instructor to assessor, friend, mentor, facilitator, chauffeur, demonstrator, adviser, supporter, fact finder, motivator, counsellor, organiser, planner, and the fountain of all knowledge.
In regard to sports, the role of the coach is to create the right conditions for learning to happen and find ways of motivating the athletes. Most athletes are highly motivated, so the task is to maintain that motivation and generate excitement and enthusiasm.
The coach has to assist athletes by preparing training programs, communicating effectively, assisting them athletes in developing new skills, and using evaluation tests to monitor the training progress and predict performance.
Therefore, you can see that it is a very difficult task and requires a very special person.
Many times, a young athlete will be asked to write an essay or speak about who they admire or look up to the most, and so many times it's the coach that gets talked about; your impact on a young athlete can make a life lasting effect, so make sure you're on the positive side of that essay. Be the coach that is the coach away from the field, rink, court, etc.
Recently in Parkland Florida, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas football coach shielded students from the unthinkable, giving his life to protect lives. So, I leave you this quote from a student….
"I had a lot of talent but didn't fit the profile of what colleges look for," Zalka said. "But Coach Feis, he'd talk to me about colleges, he'd come to my house. Coach Feis was a big part of getting me recognized, but he didn't just do it for me. He did it for everyone."
"He didn't have to die to be a hero. He was a hero every day."
