Who is coaching our children?

In many cases, especially in youth hockey, it is a player's dad.  Parents are often thrown into the situation of coaching; otherwise, there would be no team!  Some have experience and maybe even some training, but most don't.  I was lucky.  My Dad had a background in hockey and was well-versed in skillful drills. My son, on the other hand, did not have the same advantage as I did.  Two years ago, my son was taught by fathers who could not skate and had ineffective drills. I loved their enthusiasm, and their hearts were in the right place, but in the end, these players lost a year of growth. Needless to say, watching his practices was very frustrating.

A lack of training and support for parents who coach is a problem that needs attention and a solution.  Most are left on their own to figure out how to teach the kids.  This results in parents coaching their children with little background or experience, and this can really impact our children's development in the sport and, ultimately, their skill level if they become professional athletes.

The great news is that we can change this, and it is within us to do so. Here goes!
