In the world of lacrosse coaching, experience isn’t just measured in years but in the depth of passion and the drive to empower players to reach their full potential. Recently, we got to speak with Ryan Villareal, who shared invaluable insights gathered from years of dedication to the sport.
Villareal’s coaching journey began at the age of 13, where he started as a child-type Assistance Coach. Moving to Texas after college in New York, where he played at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, he quickly immersed himself back into coaching as a Defensive Coordinator, by running his own youth program, and eventually focusing on private and small group lessons while staying connected to the local lacrosse community.
What sets Villareal apart is his dedication to motivating young players, ensuring they reach their full potential. He works with players of all ages, from college students to youth players, fostering a love for the sport and guiding them towards success on and off the field.
Villareal shared 3 key lacrosse drills that he believes are essential for player development and game preparedness:

The Lock Down Drill emphasizes defensive reaction and strategy, and challenges players to not only react but to proactively dictate the flow of play. Contrary to conventional methods where defense reacts to offensive plays, Villareal advocates for defensive schemes that dictate offensive movements. This drill focuses on defensive approaches, emphasizing quick shuffles and strategic positioning to force offensive players into desired areas, thus controlling the flow of the game.
This drill stimulates real-game scenarios where players race to retrieve loose balls before they go out of bounds. It emphasizes communication, teamwork, and quick decision-making, ensuring players are prepared to secure possession effectively in high-pressure situations.
Designed to improve players’ spatial awareness, ball control, and congested ground ball situations, this drill challenges players to maneuver around an opponent while maintaining control of the ball. This drill enhances players’ ability to read the field, anticipate movements, and execute under pressure.
Coaching extends beyond strategies and drills; it’s about inspiring a lifelong passion, being dynamic, and to help players realize their capabilities both on and off the field. For Villareal, the essence of coaching lies in understanding why players are on the field. Whether it’s an escape, their love for the game, or exploring new horizons, coaches play a crucial role in supporting and nurturing players’ motivations. By tapping into these motivations and providing tailored guidance, coaches not only enhance individual skills but also contribute to the growth and longevity of the sport. To young athletes, every practice, game, and challenge, is an opportunity to learn, grow, and excel.
